Monroeville, AL: The Search For Harper Lee's Maycomb
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (15 September, 1999)
Author: Monroe County Heritage Museums
Average review score:

A must have for all Mockingbird fans!!
While on a trip to the beach, I stopped off in Monroeville to visit the Mockingbird shrine. While there, I bought this book at the museum and was SO excited about the information that was found in it. There are so many similarities between the fictional Maycomb and the Monroeville in which Nelle Harper Lee grew up! For example, Monroeville, like Maycomb, had a strange citizen who got into trouble with the law when he was young and was locked up in his house by his father for years. This young man was never seen outside his house again and was considered a phantom by the town children, including Nelle Lee. The book will be a delight to all fans of the novel. I also strongly recommend a trip to Monroeville -- it will be well worth the time and effort for any true fan.

My Cats Nick And Nora
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (August, 2002)
Authors: Isabelle Harper and Barry Moser
Average review score:

My two-and-a-half year old LOVES this book
I'm ordering this book after checking it out of the library 4 times. It is my daughter's favorite book, and it's so beautiful I don't mind reading it over and over (at least not as much as other books).

It's a very simple narrative, but I have seen my daughter play with our cats in the same ways Isabelle and Emmie play with Nick and Nora--I think that must be some of the appeal. The illustrations are simply beautiful--they capture the mood of both girls and cats, and the use of light is sublime.

My First Duchess (Harper Monogram)
Published in Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (December, 1993)
Author: Susan Sizemore
Average review score:

An Intelligent Romance Novel
This romance novel is more than your generic "historical romance" - the characters are not your typical cardboard hero who strides across the pages being macho and arrogant, nor your cardboard heroine who gives up her all for the masterful hero. The protagonists in this novel are well-developed and come across as real and admirable people with real feelings and flaws. Sizemore gives these real people real problems to deal with, so the book has a depth that is rare in the romance genre. It's also pretty hot(!) and has a great deal of humor. I recommend it highly.

Mythology (Collins Gem)

Authors: C. M. Braysher and Harper Collins
Average review score:

Covers all the basics, and then some
I picked this book up when I was preparing to appear on Jeopardy! so I could quickly review all the mythology I learned--and forgot--in school. I was not disappointed!!

This book covers all the basics in a quick, easy-to-read format. It not only outlines the major points of Greek mythology (who's who, the important stories, etc.), it also touches on Celtic and Scandanavian myth. This is a wonderful primer on the topic, and worth purchasing.

National Geographic Traveler China (National Geographic Traveler)
Published in Paperback by National Geographic (March, 2001)
Author: Damian Harper
Average review score:

Great guide to doing advanced research!
I ordered five different guidebooks on China to plan an upcoming trip. This one was defintitely the best at giving an overview of the various cities and attractions -- the descriptions are just the right length to give you a good overview, the book doesn't shy from giving recommendations and opinions, and there are many beautiful pictures to give you a better sense of each place. My wife and I both fought over this book as the one to read before our trip! NOTE: this is NOT a subsititute, but rather a complement, for a book that lists hotels, restaurants, etc. -- it does not give all the useful info. We'll probably leave it behind when we go on our trip, but will be very grateful we were able to use it in planning where to go, especially for a country as vast as China. This is the perfect "advanced reading & planning book" -- by far our favorite for China!

Outstanding Guide to the night sky
One of the best small guides for the amateur observer ever published. The comentary of Ian Ridpath and the great constelation diagrams of Wil Tirion are perfect. Anyone interested in a guide book small enough in size to be carried in a small pocket should check this one out.

Nowhere Except San Francisco : Memoirs of a Resident Tourist
Published in Paperback by Oak Point Press (17 October, 1999)
Author: Tro Harper
Average review score:

City by the Bay
Tro Harper loves San Francisco. This book reflects a few of the many reasons for his affection and will recall to others who share it, and interest those who have not been there, some of the well-known features of the city and many not so familiar. The author was a book-seller on Powell Street for many years and could watch - and hear - from the open door of his shop the unique-to-San Fracisco cable cars as they rattled back and forth. A chapter in the book deals with this feature, beloved by visitors. Other icons of the city - sourdogh bread, cracked crab, the zoo, Fisherman's Wharf, eccentric characters, a bit of history are covered in brief - sometimes one page - vignettes.

The book is the kind that you can pick up and browse through or setttle down with for an hour or two. It will amuse, entertain, surprise and instruct other "resident" tourists who think they know San Francisco and will certainly stimulate genuine tourists to visit.
